I've USB floppy drive and tried the installation manual given in the Philipines Acer with the SATA from the same site. But I the Windows XP SP2 installer still couldn't detect the SATA hardisk in my 4720.

Do I need to use other SATA driver or set the different setting rather than Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH)? Do I need to choose 82801FBM or 82801GHM?

I haven't tried to use an USB floppy drive before. because hard to find it. and I still suggest you to use nLite, from nLite you can add any drivers as you like, even you can select all drivers, and if you add more drivers, more chance to Windows XP detect SATA harddisk. I hope its can help.

  • At September 04, 2007 2:15 PM, Blogger Cahya said…

I think its no problem to use DVD when create bootable disc, but why you dont try to use CD ? all files is just about 680 MB, and a DVD is not necessary.

    Waaa!!! :(

It still doesn't work with my 4720. I've created the bootable CD; WinXP still couldn't detect the SATA hardisk. Then I created another CD with 8 drivers from 3 different sources; but it still doesn't work...

The steps given in the nLite guides also a bit different; probably I'm using the latest nLite. But I think the problem is I've still couldn't find the compatible SATA driver for 4720.

    Help! HELP!

Woohoo, I've managed to solve it on Acer 4720, just use the drivers included in the resource CD under the SW1/SATAAHCI. Use the same technique as Cahya pointed out, but use the drivers in the CD instead, its working fine now. Kudos Cahya for a great tip

I have Acer Travelmate 4720 purchased last week, and thanks to above good advice for successful WinXP install. A few tips for others:

1] I found the SATA drivers under program files\intel when Windows Vista still running.

2] nLite is excellent. You can point it to the intel directory above to find the SATA hard disk drivers.

3] Use the Acer Europe website for all drivers.

4] Download all essential drivers first before doing install. Especially network or modem drivers!

5] Before quitting Windows Vista, go to the Device Manager to see what kind of hardware you have for Camera, VGA, Modem, Wireless, SATA HD Controller. This means you don't have to guess later when you see lots of yellow ? marks in XP Device Manager.

6]The Agere modem is not recognised until you first load the Audio driver.

Overall, I'm very happy with XP on this machine. Much much faster with less "bloatware".

    I hope this helps,
    Garry.

thanks for ur advice but still cant work on my aspire 4720. by the way, when im compare acer 4710 and acer 4720 aero website, acer 4710 got driver for winxp and win vista.but not in 4720 web site that had only win vista driver in it. and also no bios. Can win vista driver be use to win xp?like garry said, 3] Use the Acer Europe website for all drivers.

  • At September 18, 2007 9:16 PM, Blogger Cahya said…

    Thanks a lot Garry :)

Yus, to know the vista drivers is compatible with xp or not, you may read readme.txt or version.txt

    for example:
    this is from version.txt :

Intel Chipset INF driver for Win2K / WinXP / WinVista - WW -

    VERSION : 8.2.0.1012
    DATE STAMP : 12/08/2006
    BUILD ID : HECSFC02

if you can't get the driver from acer website, you can get it directly from the vendor website, like nvidia.com, atheros.com, intel.com, etc...

    1. You may download and try newer driver
    2. You may reinstall windows using another Windows XP CD.
    3. or you may use AHCI, not IDE mode.
    4. or try this tips to make your computer shutdown faster

    I hope its help...

    Hi Cahya.
    1. is AHCI compatible with XP? when it tried installing the driver, an error that OS is not supported.
    2. empowering for acer is only supported by vista , right?

i got the latest drivers. one more thing, after installing the display drivers, when i checked it in the device manager it showed that the intel has the ellow exclamation point

  • At October 22, 2007 8:50 PM, Blogger Cahya said…

    1. Your AHCI driver is for vista. Download for XP here ... and about AHCI

    2. try this link "Acer Empowering Technology and Windows XP"

    3. Yellow exclamation ? try another driver. please check your driver is compatible for XP or not.

    Hi friends,
    Thanks for ongoing discussions.

On my 4720 with XP, I also found Windows not shutting down properly - ie, "hang" on "Windows is shutting down".

I found the newer sound driver from the taiwan website, but this caused a *big* issue with Skype, with BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). So, I remain with the old version of sound driver.

The problem with not shutting down on my 4720 is with the Webcam.

So, I 'fixed' it like this:
1] Install Webcam (i have the Suyin one)
2] Use the webcam like normal.
3] When finish using, go to the System->Hardware in the Control Panel, and 'deactivate' the webcam under "imaging devices".
4] Windows XP now shuts down properly. I leave the webcam 'deactivated' until I want to use it again, then just 'activate'.

My windows shuts down properly every time now.

    Thanks,
    Garry [in JKT]

    1. Insert Win XP CD t your dvd-rw
    2. Just "copy" and "paste" all files inside Windows XP installation disc into folder in your local disk.
    3. follow step part 1 and on this step (click for picture) just select "Integrate Drivers" and "Create a Booteble ISO"
    4. then follow step part 2 (it's not exactly same with what appears on your screen because you select "Intergrate Drivers" and "Create a Bootable ISO" only)

    5. then select direct burn to blank CD, to burn your ISO file direct to CD instead store ISO file in your local disk.

I used the SATA driver as per the original instructions but in the blue installation sequence it say Windows will load support for the follwing mass storage devices (none)

I have used nLite correctly and added the driver like the original guide said.

Should I use the AHCI drivers from the European site?

Thanks a lot for an enlightening article. I was so bothered about this problem and U came to the rescue. The only problem I have now is the Fedora 7 I installed on the machine (for dual boot) refuses to shutdown. Perhaps something to do with the SATA drive or perhaps the ACPI configuration. I would be happy if you can say something on this.

Thanks again for your help. Keep up the good work

i have a strange prob with my laptp(acer 4520)i have xp pro SP2(32 bit) on it.whenever i connect my reliance data card it connects at 28.8 kbps...which is strange......what should i do?
please help me cause according to reliance its my laptop's fault and acer says they dont understand

i have connected it in diff machines and they gave more than 100 kbps(115.2/150/230 kbps even)

fedora 7 refuses to shutdown? maybe a kernel bug....

    try this, this, this, this

you may try to recompile the kernel, or update the kernel, if no kernel update that can solve the problem... try update bios ;)

Download BIOS update for Aspire 4710 ver.1.10 (link) 2,1Mb

Hi Avishek... I haven't tried reliance data card yet... 28,8 KBps when you download something or speed from reliance data card to your laptop? I think that speed is just like serial port speed that you can adjust it. open device manager, right click on the hardware, choose properties... select the speed... you know..

  • At November 11, 2007 2:49 AM, Blogger Avishek said…

HI,according to reliance its data card gives a "download speed" of 80-100kbps...unbelievable...?thats what they say...however even after increasing the port speed i get a download speed of 15kbps...its ridiculous though that the
"connected at" speed is a mere 28.8kbps..finding no other solution i have started to believe that acer 4520[(amd 64*2),thats what i have and not a 4710]is rather incompatible to this reliance data card(usb..ZTECH modem)and that a 64 bit platform running a 32 bit xp gives a little problem as far as data transfer or addresing is concerned..however i havent found anybody else who has faces such a problem...

..anyways could u tell me if USB 2.0 drivers r really available with xp SP2,cause some say they r and some deny...

P.S :Felt great on seeing ur reply...really appreciate!

Hi avishek, do you use a P2P software like BitTorrent or Ares when download something? you can try this patch on your Windows XP SP2. This patch will make download speed of p2p software increase :)

don't forget to restart your laptop.

USB 2.0 driver? I think it depend when your windows xp sp2 CD issued ... if your CD issued about before september 2004 it will have bug on usb 2.0 driver (see this and this)

but if issued after september 2004, I think this bug have eliminated.

thanx 4 that info...didnt know that

i had installed a patch p2p but while testing 4 port the test failed..ok will try this..reliance uses a "v-client" to optimize its speed which connects to server at
    netconnectbooster.reliancecommunication.co.in

..might b this server poses some problem..i m gaining a lot of knowledge bout wireless networks lately thanx 2 reliance..hunh..

i even heard that reliance and tata have hidden algos to restrict the speed of connection based on the plan taken...eg if its a "20GB free" plan then the connection speed is never more than 115.2 kbps..4 the unlimited plan its 230 kbps...strange..i donno whether its true..

Do not install Acer Crystal Eye Driver (Click here for details).

Windows XP will detect the camera as USB Video Device.

Only 40 GB ?? maybe when you install Windows XP you forgeted to fully format your HDD.... so there is "unformatted space" in your HDD

I couldn't install XP on 4720 using the instructions above (using nlite, adding Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH) from the CD). I was out of time, so I just changed the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE mode on the BIOS -> XP installed. The next day, I tried to change it back to AHCI, and windows won't boot. I read on the web about updating the SATA controller drivers in XP to the ones in SW1/SATAAHCI. It worked :).

Notes: updating to 82801GBM still won't work, I chose something like HEM in the driver list ( I checked the working device number/ID in device manager, and choose the closest one in the IAAHCI.inf ).

    Hope it helps

I've recently bought the 4720Z model, managed to get sound working under Ubuntu Gutsy, but windows XP just does not seem to like the Realtek drivers provided by Acer. I tried some of the links here as well (although most of the chinese FTP links seemed to be down), but with no luck. Device manager gives me a code 10 "Could not start this device".

Maybe there is a difference between the 4270 and 4270Z audio chipset ? Should I be looking at dloading directly from Realtek's site ?

thanks cahya. I had already tried that a few days ago, but without much luck. I can play sound through my USB skype phone, but not through speakers. I don´t want to have to go out and buy an external soundcard - has anyone managed to get sound working on the 4720z model ?

Cahya, could you repost the drivers from the dl1.acer.com.cn site, as that site doesnt seem to work anymore.

    Thanks a lot

    Thanks Cahya.
From the filename and filesize, Im quite sure this is the same one I´ve tried before without any success, but will download and try again just incase.

Have you had any success on 4720z running XP with this driver ? Or anyone else for that matter ?

Theres a feature in the BIOS that lets you enable IDE support so windows xp can detect your HD. Saved a lot of time on my end, rather downloading nlite. Just an fyi.

    ps.
you can install the sata drivers afterwards.

    Dear Cahya,

I recently bought ACER 4720 Z model, it is not shutting down, unfortunately i came across this post after i installed the webcam drivers. Now if i uninstall the webcam it is shutting down properly but when i restart it again windows is picking the same webcam drivers and not making it as a USB device as u mentioned. How can i make this happen, i.e.,to remove the already installed drivers and have the webcam detected as an USB device, Ur prompt help will appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi CAHYA,

driver for bluetooth was successfully downloaded( acer china) and installed. But it seems driver installation was not the actual cause as the problem of receiving files persists.Any other idea?
